The government plans to hire 30,000 non-uniformed personnel in the next two years to occupy posts held by police officers so they could do field work, President Benigno Aquino III said Tuesday.
Aquino, in his speech at the 112th anniversary of Police Service at the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame, noted that of 146,085 police officers, 30,000 are doing administrative work.
"Malayo po ito sa target nating magkaroon ng 1 is to 500 ratio para sa actual field personnel-to-population ratio. Ang ating solusyon: kumuha ng tatlumpung libong non-uniform personnel sa susunod na dalawang taon," he said.
He said the plan was part of the PNP operation transformation project. It would help generate jobs and at the same time increase police visibility in communities.
Aquino also said the government would attain a one is to one ratio police to pistol ratio before yearend with the acquisition of 74,879 units of Glock 17 9mm pistol.
(PNA)
