Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes, Jr. has reminded candidates running for office in the May polls to refrain from campaigning this early.
The election period officially began last Sunday, Jan 13, but Brillantes said politicians should not mistake it as the start of the campaign period.
"'Election period' is different from the 'campaign period'. I hope politicians will not mistake one for the other," Brillantes said in his official Twitter account.
"Official campaigning SHOULD not begin until the start of the campaign period," he added.
As early as December last year, some senatorial bets can be seen in several television ads.
Brillantes said the campaign period will start on Feb 12 for national candidates and party-list groups, and March 29 for local candidates.
During the election period, certain activities such as the gun bun, can be regulated.
In a related development, the Comelec Special Bids and Awards committee on Monday declared a failure of bidding for the National Support Center after SPI Global--the lone bidder--failed to submit the necessary requirements.
Under the rules, the SBAC would call for a second bidding. (PNA)
